As part of the project I have written a program for the PC called ReadOut, a text browser for blind students to use with synthetic speech output or screen magnification programs. It provides structured access to course text and links human voice recordings to the text on the screen. I'm still working on improving the playback of the audio and on ways to automate the authoring and digitising audiotapes.
Version 2 of ReadOut is now being used by students, 6 courses are available as a pilot service from the Office for Students with Disabilities.
